Indoor air quality in classrooms

The CSTB assisted the City of Aix-les-Bains in testing various air circulation strategies in classrooms that do not have mechanical ventilation systems.

The project, named AER’AIX, provided an opportunity to test an indoor air stuffiness indicator light and various types of schedules to promote the opening of windows. The effectiveness of each strategy was assessed based on the level of reduction in the indoor air stuffiness index, calculated before and after implementation of the strategy, and according to its acceptability among school staff. The experiment was conducted in 75 classrooms in 9 schools in Aix-les-Bains between December 2017 and March 2018.

The CSTB provided the measuring equipment and protocols and used the results to identify the most effective strategy. This project enabled Aix-les-Bains to develop an Indoor Air Quality Plan and thus be among the most committed and active French cities tackling this issue.
