Bioguess: biodectection at two historic sites

Photo: CSTB

Bioguess was commissioned to work within a multidisciplinary team to perform an evaluation at two historic sites: the royal necropolis of Tanis and the tomb of Pediamenopet in Luxor.

The overall mandate involved, first, understanding the decay mechanisms affecting materials in the royal necropolis and, second, investigating the air quality in the immediate environment of the tomb of Pediamenopet, whose air had been reported to be "unbreathable", threatening the progress of an epigraphical mission. This work was supported by the French Institute for Eastern Archaeology (IFAO) and the Fond Khéops pour l'Archéologie.

The task was coordinated by the Louvre Museum and the Center for Research and Restoration of Museums of France (C2RMF). Bioguess provided expertise to characterize the air quality of the tombs and detected the presence of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) within the site.
