Focusing more on the city than the building to manage electricity demand. To meet this challenge, the CITYOPT project was launched last February in Nice and will last three years (2014–2017). It brings together the Nice Côte d’Azur metropolis, EDF and the CSTB. This project’s goal is to develop collaborative digital technologies that enable citizens to optimize their power consumption. A scientific and technical, as well as social and economic challenge.
Introduced across the Nice Côte d’Azur metropolis, CITYOPT is experimenting with collaborative power management. This involves real-time adjustment of local power consumption based on available production (particularly necessary during consumption peaks). In close collaboration with EDF and the Nice Côte d’Azur metropolis, the CSTB is participating in the development of digital applications that share information between and project stakeholders to help manage power consumption at key times. Technically, the digital data management uses readings from Linky smart meters, installed in homes as part of the Nice Grid project and soon to reach Nice.
After designing the Ecofamilies digital energy monitoring display system for homes, the CSTB is taking another step in its commitment to collaborative energy management. With CITYOPT, a “social network of energy” is spreading through the city, thanks to volunteer participation. The project is now looking for mechanisms that provide the most incentives to control consumption, based on the economic and environmental justification for collective action, supported by collaborative digital efforts. The CSTB, as part of its leadership in this smart city experiment, is managing the assessment of testing.
