At a public workshop held in Paris on June 25th, the Indoor Air Quality Observatory (OQAI) presented the first results of a national campaign conducted between 2013 and 2017 in 301 nursery and elementary schools in mainland France. The initial data, measuring air quality, floor dust contamination and the presence of lead in paint, provides valuable knowledge on the indoor environments of schools, the place, after home, where children spend most of their time. Observations established that the quality of the air breathed by French schoolchildren in their classrooms is generally satisfactory. It is better than the air in housing units or equivalent spaces, though the study points to some areas for improvement in schools.
